The students in 8th Grade Current Events are learning about blogs. I've created a classroom blog for students to ask questions about current events as well as respond to questions I post.

With our students who spoke only spanish here at New Haven, I used the Smartboard for all our class sessions. They enjoyed the lessons and benefited from the technology offered in the computer lab. We were also able to use the English in a Flash program to help with their understanding of the english language.

I have developed the website for the 4th grade group here at New Haven. With this website we can keep the students and their parents or guardians with updated information on current events happening in our school. I used input from the teachers as well as input from the students for some of the content. It gets updated often so check it out and keep coming back to see what's new.
This month one of our teachers was actually able to conduct a lesson using the website with reference to their current studies of the underground railroad. Way to go!

Great use of Technology, Raul! Thanks for sharing. Also, Thanks for your work with teachers on their websites. That is a great way to keep parents and community in the know! Spread the word to the other teachers in your building about Tooting their horns on this blog, as well. I would like to be able to share the results with the School Board, Mr. Danhoff and others who might be interested in hearing about all the great tech lessons and activities happening in the Willard City School District that often times go unnoticed. Keep Tooting!

I know I have already mentioned something to you, Kyle, but great job with the use of blogs, flip cameras and other tech tools in your classroom! Keep it up!

In my Current Events classes, I have been creating gmail accounts with students and encouraging kids to use these email accounts as professional accounts for school. With gmail accounts, students can use google documents to save research papers, PowerPoints, and other assignments. These documents are saved on-line and cuts out the need for disks and flash drives. I'm hoping students will continue to use these accounts through high school.

Check out the new and improved 4th Grade Group website for New Haven. I've added text to speech technology to the pages. Now, not only can you view and read the pages, but the pages will actually talk to you and give you the information verbally.

I just had my smartboard installed last week. We have used it every day in Math class. My students have been big helpers! They have used them in other classrooms. Kids seem to be more familiar with this stuff than me! My students love to use the smartboard for math. Does anybody have any lesson plans to share?

I divided my classes into 3 groups. We each went on an interactive website about grammar: it was called "sheppardsoftware" and was in a packet from Mark.

We covered nouns, adjectives, verbs and commas. The students enjoyed the activity.

Kathy,
I'm glad you have jumped right into using the Smart Board. I will get you a list of some interactive sites that can be used with the Smart Board.

Peggy,
Sheppard Software is a great website. Glad to see you are using it in your classroom. This is one of the sites I was going to mention for Kathy to use with her Smart Board, as well. You may wish to mention something to her about it. Thanks for sharing and for using tech in the classroom.

Raul,
Thanks for what you are doing out at New Haven with the websites. I appreciate your work and I know the teachers and students do, as well. Great job!

FYI to all who have posted to this blog...Google has recently updated Blogger to give users the option of creating tabs within their blog. I am currently working on consolidating my tech-related blogs into one. I have embedded a forum within markwhitestechblog.blogspot.com for Toot! Teaching Tech that may be a better stage for sharing. The only way I will know if it is better for all is to have some of you try it out and let me know.
The reason I haven't shared this website with the district users yet is because I would like this process to be as easy for everyone as possible first. I believe a forum/bulletin board setting may be better in the long run. I could do some of the same things with a Wiki, but I like Blogger and would like to stick with it if I can. Again, try it out and let me know what you think. The direct link to the forum is http://markwhitestechblog.blogspot.com/p/toot.html#/news/

I have a wiki for my classes at http://gallion-wiki.wikispaces.com/ Students and parents can use it to see homework assignments and additional resources. They can get into our math book and see every page as well as homework assignments. The link to the textbook also provides online tutorials for students who need a bit more help. I have been really pleased to have students use the wiki to get their assignments when they missed school. Others who lost papers have gone to the wiki to get another copy of the work.
I started the wiki in the middle of the year, so if you check it out start with chapter 7 in both math and science. This is still a work in progress.
